INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE STATEMENT OF 16 OCTOBER 2026: IOC evolves stakeholder engagement model through dedicated working groups

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced today that it will transition its stakeholder engagement model from a commission-based approach to a working group approach. This is a result of the ongoing Fit for the Future process and will enable more targeted engagement on key strategic priorities and policy development across the Olympic Movement.

After more than a year of consultation and review, including discussions with its commission members, the IOC has concluded that working groups established with a clearly defined remit provide an effective and flexible mechanism for shaping policy and supporting decision-making.

Over the past 15 months, a number of working groups have already been created to address key Fit for the Future topics, demonstrating the value of this approach.

As part of the review, the IOC paused its non-institutional commissions in February this year while assessing future models of engagement. Following this assessment, the IOC has decided to discontinue these commissions and continue using working groups as its primary model for bringing together expertise on specific issues and opportunities for the Olympic Movement.

The commissions that will be discontinued are:

  • Athletes‘ Entourage
  • Culture and Olympic Heritage
  • Digital Engagement and Marketing Communications
  • Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • IOC Advisory Committee on Human Rights
  • Olympic Education
  • Olympic Programme
  • Olympism365
  • Public Affairs and Corporate Communications
  • Revenues and Commercial Partnerships
  • Sustainability and Legacy
  • Technology and Technical Innovation

The following institutional commissions and committees will continue their work:

  • Athletes‘ Commission
  • Audit Committee
  • Coordination Commissions for the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games
  • Ethics Commission
  • Finance Commission
  • Future Host Commission for the Games of the Olympiad
  • Future Host Commission for the Olympic Winter Games
  • Health, Medicine and Science Commission
  • Human Resources Committee
  • IOC Members Election Commission
  • IOC Television and Marketing Services (TMS) Board of Directors
  • Legal Affairs Commission
  • Olympic Broadcasting Services Board of Directors
  • Olympic Channel Services Board of Directors
  • Olympic Refuge Foundation Board
  • Olympic Solidarity Commission

The transition is designed to provide greater flexibility in engaging subject-matter expertise while strengthening the IOC’s ability to address specific opportunities and challenges through focused, purpose-driven collaboration.
