GENDER QUOTA FOR SWISS SPORTS BODIES REPEALED

It has been reported that the House of Representatives (National Council) of the Swiss Parliament has voted 109 to 81 to repeal the gender quota rule for leadership boards of national sports federations and umbrella groups like Swiss Olympic.

This rule required that these boards and groups must comprise 40% of each gender and only came into force on 1 January 2025.

The motion to repeal this rule argued that rigid quotas are out of touch with reality, and cited such examples as the Swiss Wrestling Federation, which is around 90% male, now goes to the Council of States for final approval.

The same Parliamentary session also voted 109 to 80 to repeal the 12-year term limit previously introduced for leadership of Sports Federations in Switzerland.
