Ice Hockey in Kenya

It has been announced that the Ice Lions of Kenya has become the fifth African team to be admitted to membership of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), which has 84 members and is based in Zurich.

Kenya has now joined teams from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and South Africa.

The Ice Lions of Kenya were formed by a group of expatriates from the United States and Canada in 2016.

The sole ice rink in East and Central Africa is at the Panari Hotel in Nairobi, which overlooks the City’s wildlife park, the home to lions, giraffes and zebra.

Due to high costs, the Ice Lions of Kenya are only able currently to train once a week.

However, membership of the IIHF brings access to more funding and coaching expertise, as well as entry to international competitions.
