SPORTS BROADCASTING IN SWITZERLAND
Sport and broadcasting have been well described as “a marriage made in heaven”, and this is particularly true of the broadcasting of football, the world’s most popular sport.
Eye-watering sums are paid for sports broadcasting rights.
For example, the English Premier League has sold for a record sum of £6.7 billion (around Sw.Frs. 7.54 billion) to SKY and TNT the domestic rights to show up to 270 live games per season for four years from the 2025-2026 season.
In Switzerland, blue Sport has agreed a new deal with the Swiss Football League (SFL) and the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG) for the broadcasting rights for the Swiss football leagues for a further five years from the 2025/26 season. Blue Sport will provide coverage of more than 3,000 live matches annually in German, French and Italian direct from football stadiums in Switzerland.
Swiss football fans can also access highlights, news and analyses at any time on blue News or blue Sport social media channels. Free-to-air TV coverage is also guaranteed with one Super League match per round to be broadcast on the SRG channels. In addition, the free TV channel blue Zoom will broadcast top matches from the Challenge League. However, fans wanting to watch all the matches will need a blue Sport annual or monthly subscription.
Sports Broadcasting Agreements are very complex to negotiate and draft, involving copyright, rights definitions and high-tech issues, amongst others, and we professionally advise and assist clients with them.
Often broadcast coverage of sports events is sponsored by commercial companies, and we also provide professional advice and assistance on Sports Broadcasting Sponsorship Agreements, which also present some legal challenges.
